Email Review print reviewIn “Doomsday” Dr. Doom plots to ruin Richards career by circulating a “journal” that claims Richards purposely exposed the team to cosmic radiation as part of a theory he was testing.
He also plans to systematically take out the Fantastic 4 one-by-one, and steal Reed Richard’s newest invention that will allow him to open a gateway to the Negative Zone and suck much of the team’s beloved city in with it.
This was an action packed episode to say the least. Once again Dr. Doom serves as the villain, but unlike the last episode this was true Doom from start to finish. The episode starts with the team hot on the trail of a rampaging creature in downtown NY. Using his newly created Negative Zone glove (a glove that creates a gateway into the Negative Zone).
What I really enjoyed about this episode was that the storyline showed the intelligence of not just Reed Richards, but of the rest of the team as well. Without giving anything away I will say that at one point the team becomes imprisoned in Doom’s dungeon, and upon realizing that they’re prison cells are programmed to counter their powers, the team then discovers that they must use their powers on each other’s cells.
Once Doom reveals himself as the one behind the leaked journal, the two engage in a battle that shows just how powerful Doom really is. Once Reed is subdued, Doom sets out to use the “glove” what else….destroy the city.
The ending of the episode REALLY shows just how good the animation in this show is. The show blends both traditional 2D and 3D animation in a seamless way that totally lends itself to the series. An example of the beautiful animation comes in the look and feel of Reed Richards’ lab set up. Never before has the Baxter Building, and the team’s various inventions look so good.
Out of all of the episodes that have aired (you know, the whopping 3) I would have to say that this is my favorite so far. The action was fantastic, the story was great, and as always the voice acting was top notch. Doom’s voice is absolutely perfect, and the voices of the team are really starting to grow on me. When I first heard that Hiro Kanagawa would be providing the voice of Mr. Fantastic I was a bit hesitant because I can remember him as Principal Kwan from his short lived run on “Smallville.” Now that I’ve had the chance to listen to Kanagawa voice Richards I can honestly say that he has got the PERFECT voice for the role. Richards is calm, collected and intelligent, and Kanagawa conveys all of these qualities perfectly with his voice portrayal.

BTW, the show’s theme song is awesome. It’s like a new age spy theme that fits the theme of the show.
