They’re creepy and they’re cooky, mysterious and spooky, and for the first time they’re on DVD!

Despite being born nearly 20 years (18 to be exact) after the premiere episode of The Addams Family aired, I can remember catching the show in reruns all throughout my childhood, and loving the misadventures of Gomez, Morticia, Fester, Pugsley, Wednesday and of course their faithful butler Lurch.

Now for the first time ever The Addams Family are on DVD in The Addams Family Volume One. The 3-disc set contains 22 original episodes, audio commentary, original drawings and photos, featurettes, and my favorite; theme song karaoke.

What’s great about shows like this was that they were entertaining because of the simplicity about them. Sure in 1964 this was all cutting edge FX, but by today’s standards some of these gags seem a bit outdated, which is precisely why I like them. Shows like The Addams Family didn’t rely on over-the-top FX like some shows today do, instead they relied on their charm and storytelling to captivate a generation with their blissfully macabre adventures.

The overall presentation of the DVD’s is actually quite nice. The set comes in a beautiful black & white box featuring a “family portrait” on the cover, and a nice shot of Thing on the back. I was actually pretty impressed with the box art because it seems like some thought was put into it’s design rather than just throwing on a picture and sending it to press.

In terms of the quality of the discs, the transfer is just a tad pixilated at times, but overall very sharp which helps bring those classic moments that every family in 1964 was watching, into the 21st century. The audio of the discs has got to be it’s strongest point. When you first turn on an episode and that classic theme begins to play you’re in for a real treat as it’s presented in Dolby Digital.

Overall The Addams Family Volume One is a must have for any fan of the series, or even some of you who, like me never got to catch it during it’s original run on TV. After viewing this set I think it’s safe to say that The Addams Family are back, and they’ve never looked better!

Comments

I used to love watching this show whenever it was on. The sensibilities of what is beautiful vs what is ugly and what is good vs bad was so poignant and funny at times. Very entertaining. Hope folks that haven’t seen the show will check it out.
