Email Review print reviewWow. That’s all I have to say. I am stunned and wordless. If you buy one comic this year, Rebellion needs to be the one. I now know why the last series in Empire was so important.
I am in love with the art work in this first iteration of Rebellion. Wil Glass is the colorist and his style fits the seriousness of the universe like a glove. It is more realistic in its shadowing and coloring. The saturation is lighter and the hue isn’t quite as vivid giving the artwork a more soft feel. This softness actually allows the details to become more prominent because the outlining and shadowing isn’t dominating the eye. Case in point, take a look at the panel near the end of the book where the prisoner is hanging from the electrocuffs. You can see every detail on his scars which could have been lost if they had turned back up the saturation.
The colorist isn’t the only one that makes this work. The penciler, Brandon Badeaux, did an awesome job also. Because the saturation is lower, the pencil tends to come through more which gives the shadowing a more in-depth feel. The detail is excellent throughout the comic and continually left my jaw on the ground. You can see every muscle and wrinkle yet the proportions are dead on and don’t leave all the characters looking like Arnold Schwartzeneger.
The story is top notch. It is set after the destruction of the first Death Star and before “Empire Strikes Back”. The whole story is about Lt. Janek Sunber (aka Tank), who is now an imperial officer, and his motivation for betraying his good friend from childhood, Luke Skywalker. The action is awe inspiring. There are some gigantic battle scenes along with some harrowing close quarter action that the story boarding pulls off perfectly. The pacing is great and not one panel feels out of place. The flashbacks get interspersed throughout the issue and helped to promote the story rather than lose me.
In conclusion, I loved every panel of the story. Tank has become a real person to me. The penciling is stunning and detailed. The coloring revolutionary and beautiful to behold. This a must buy. 5 stars out of 5 stars.
