The Batman EXP Series: The Riddler

The design for The Riddler in “The Batman” is probably my favorite design of the entire show, which is why I am so disappointed with this figure.

Empire #39 delivers better than #38. There is plenty of action and even some compelling dialogue that delivers a good punch for this story. Read on for all the little details.

"Empire” by Dark Horse has been running awhile now and is quite popular with the natives. I am jumping into the series, and a side story to boot, mid-stream. #38 did not endear me to the series at all. Read on for all my nitpicks.

This book was pretty good.  It had some nice fight scenes and sword play and really read like a movie.  A predictable movie, but who cares if it’s fun and it is fun.  The pencils are cool.  Colleen Wing is hot!  You should at least give this book a try.  I think you’ll like it.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5

This was a really good story.  I had my doubts when I first started but it had a moral and all.  I was expecting just another punch ‘em out fight after fight, but it had a real story.  Kudos to Peter David and I liked Mike Wieringo’s pencils more and more as I turned the page.  This book is worth having and I may even add it to my pull list.  To be released 3/1/06.

This book had a Death’s Head story and a New Universe Mark Hazzard: Merc story.  Maybe it’s because I came in on the middle of the story but Death’s Head was very boring and unintersting to me.  The Merc story was much better and had a great twist in the end.  To be released 3/1/06.

Star Brand #1

Marvel has brought back the “New Universe” from 1986 to celebrate the creativity and inspiration of that line.  I don’t know what the heck they are talking about because the “New Universe” I remembered was terrible.  I think it lasted about three years and it was done.  Anyway, Starbrand #1 is thankfully a one shot issue.  I thought it was boring, boring, boring.  The only reason to buy this book is that John Romita Sr. and Jr do the cover art.  Save the $2.99 for The American Way!  To be released 3/1/06.

Uncanny X-Men 470

This issue is fantastic! I was just saying in my last Preview how Claremont was not at the top of his game. Well he must be focusing his creative genius into Uncanny X-Men because these last couple of issues have rocked. The art from Billy Tan is out of this world! This guy is moving up the the top of my favorites list with each issue. Only one caveat to this story and that is Cannonball’s new costume. Who in the heck thought it would be a good idea to put a big silver C on his chest and shoulders? What a joke! Outside of that this issue is true comic magic that makes me reminisce back to the days of old. Buy two of this issue!  To be released 3/1/06.

Five issues in and I can already say that this is not Chris Claremont’s best stuff.  It’s been one fight after another, being attacked for no reason and that’s about it.  I will keep reading this book because I have a hopeless X-Title addict and have been for about 18 years.  You have a choice though, and if I could I would skip it.  To be released 3/1/06.

I am going to catch a lot of crap from my friends on this one. Ms. Marvel is a definite buy! There I said it, now let me have your baseless insults. I am telling you this book has it all, great writing, nice art, a hot superheroine and a real nasty foe. It’s also got tons and dialogue and some great humor. Captain America actually takes a call from Carol while he is fighting a bunch of guys one handed and she is flying at Mach 3! Get this book or you’ll be sorry.  To be released 3/1/06.

This book is very well written by superstar Warren Ellis.  It’s a little out there with all the humor.  Fin Fang Foom was the baddy in this issue and I actually felt sorry for him.  Stuart Immonen’s pencils are not my thing, but they do fit the whimsical style of the story.  The bottom line is this is a funny book and a good read.  Pick it up.  To be released 3/1/06.

X-Men The End #3

The title is very well suited because a lot of X-Men meet their end in this issue. It’s a must have if you are an X-Men fan, but if your not then I wouldn’t bother. Chris Claremont is weaving a beautiful story and I believe him to be the definitive X-Men writer. The pencils are good but I think Sean Chin’s faces all look alike.  To be released 3/1/06.

The makers of SAW II should be commended for staying close enough to the original to keep that same gut-wrenching effect, but also making it a good suspense/thriller movie on it’s own merit.

To be honest, I am probably the only person on the face of this planet who hasn’t played K.O.T.O.R. I am an admitted Star Wars buff and role playing aficionado and I haven’t even lifted a finger to buy the game. I should be ashamed.

Anyways, I am trying to redeem myself and saw Knights of the Old Republic on the comic book rack and I had to pick it up.

New X-Men #23

This is the first time I have ever picked up an issue of New X-Men and I am pleasantly surprised. The art is very good and I would like to see this Brooks guy doing some of the mainstream X-Men titles. I really like his style and the cover is great. The story ties in with what is going on with the rest of the X-Men and you see some questionable conduct from Emma Frost. I give this book a big thumbs up. Pick it up at your local comic book shop on 2/22/06!

Batman Journey Into Knight #7

by: curvezilla

The best part about this book is the cover art.  The interior art is okay but the faces sometime look really weird.  It’s the way Tan Eng Huat draws the eyes.  Sometime they are like big round white circles that almost look like coins placed on the eyes of the dead.  The story is pretty dark and I know a lot of you guys enjoy that, but I am more inclined to see some comics that are uplifting.  If you are a hardcore Batman fan then I guess this book is for you.  If not pass on it and spend that $2.50 on The American Way #1.

Darth Vader Transformers Review

Transformers always evoke a grand sense of nostalgia since I owned a couple when I was young and played with them often. So when I received this Darth Vader Transformer, I was excited as a kid on too much sugar candy.

The short version, for those of my audience that are “attention challenged”, is that the overall look of Darth Vader as a transformer is highly satisfying and definitely worth an investment. Read on for a more detailed review.

WOW! Wow, wow, wow! This book was great and I can’t wait to get the next issue. The art all the way around is fantastic. Georges Jeanty’s pencils are awesome and Randy Mayor’s colors really make the pages pop. You guys are really going to love the premise of this book and that is all I am going to say because I don’t want to give anything away. I haven’t been this excited about a book in a while. I think it is a fresh look at Superheros, Propaganda and the need for hope. If your local comic shop doesn’t have this book ordered let them know you want it. Release date is 2/22/06.

The Warlord #1

comic image 1 stars

This is a relaunch of The Warlord that ran from 1976 to 1989 and was one of the most popular sword and sorcery books of it’s time.  The first issue wasn’t very exciting for me.  Maybe it’s because I have never read The Warlord and know absolutely nothing about him.  I thought the action was hard to follow on some panels.  I really couldn’t tell what the heck I was looking at.  The pencils were okay and I think Bart Sears has a lot going for him.  His art reminded me a lot of Andy Smith’s early stuff, but not as clean.  I was hoping this book would live up to the writing of Conan, but it doesn’t even come close.  I am going to say pass on this one guys.

X-Men #183

Apocalypse has landed and now it’s decision time! Things are finally cranking up and it’s going to get really good. Mutants are taking sides and I think you are going to be very surprised about who joins Apocalypse. There is also a bonus Horseman of the Apocalypse story. I think this is by far one of the best titles Marvel is producing right now. Peter Miligan is weaving a great story and Larroca’s pencils are superb. Get this book even if you are not an X-Men fan.

Storm #1

by: curvezilla

comic image 3 stars

Storm #1 is the lead up to the “Wedding of The Century” story arc.  Black Panther and Storm as supposed to be getting married but we will see if that really happens.  Anyway this story starts off with Ororo at 12 years old and going through puberty.  This story is set about 6 years after “Before the Storm” story arc and she is now in Kenya (I think).  The interior art is okay but the cover by Mike Mayhew is fantastic.  I am going to give this book a buy recommendation, but the jury is still out until I see more.

Wolverine #39

I have high hopes for this story arc and so far I have not disappointed. There is a huge part of Logan’s past revealed on the last page of this issue. Texeira art is gritty and I think just right for the story. If you are not on board with the whole Wolverine Origins story arc you better jump on now because I have a feeling it’s going to be a wild ride.

I am going to come right out and say this book is a must have just because of the new costume.  Does that mean I am a fan of the new costume?  No, but it is an event in the life of one of the most iconic comic characters ever that warrants adding to your collection.
