Microsoft Corp. kicked off its seasonal campaign to bring more gamers onto its platform today by announcing it was slashing the price of its Xbox 360 gaming console.
Effective today, the main Xbox 360 console package, which includes the system, a 20 GB hard drive, wireless controller and Xbox 360 headset, will sell for $350, a $50 price cut from the system’s previous $400 price tag.
The other versions of the console will see price cuts as well. The Xbox 360 Core System, which comes without a hard drive, will sell for $280 and the Xbox 360 Elite, with its jet black exterior, 120 GB hard drive, and HDMI cable, will retail for $450.
In addition, Microsoft unveiled the pricing for its upcoming “Halo 3” themed console, a green and gold system that matches the color scheme of the “Halo” franchise’s protagonist’s armor. That console will hit retail in September at a $400 pricepoint.
The drop comes timed for the release of the new “Madden NFL” annual installment typically one of the year’s top selling franchises every year for the console.
With rumors swirling on the Internet and Sony cutting the price of its PlayStation 3 console last month, a price drop for the Xbox 360 seemed inevitable.
“The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360,” said Mitch Koch, corporate vice president, Global Retail Sales and Marketing Group, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “On the eve of the best holiday games lineup ever and the launch of ‘Madden NFL 08,’ there has never been a better time to jump into Xbox 360.”

Mister Koch seems very proud they have been able to keep the price higher and longer then everyone else. Is that something you really want to be bragging about? Isn’t that kind of like rubbing a gamers nose in the higher price?
