Spider-Man Broadway Musical in Development

Oh, come on, you know you have been hoping this would happen with Julie Taymor and U2’s Bono and The Edge Collaborating on the Musical.

Marvel Studios has confirmed that plans are underway to produce a Broadway musical based on Marvel’s ever popular Superhero, Spider-Man. Produced by Hello Entertainment / David Garfinkle, Martin McCallum, Marvel Entertainment and SONY Pictures Entertainment, the musical will be directed by Tony Award-winner Julie Taymor with U2’s Bono and The Edge creating new music and lyrics for the project. A reading is scheduled to take place this summer. No dates for a Broadway opening have been confirmed at this time.

The Spider-Man musical will mark the first time a Marvel character has been the subject of a show on Broadway. In addition to co-producing the show, Hello Entertainment is arranging all financing for the project.

The all star creative team, led by Julie Taymor, Bono and The Edge, is second to none and we are certain this project will delight fans of Spider-Man and new audiences alike,” said David Maisel, Chairman, Marvel Studios, whose previous Broadway credits include spearheading the 1999 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Fosse.

I wonder if they will be using the Spider-man Musical script that was done in Europe. All Spider-Man could do in that show was flips, and cartwheels, he scaled buildings with the use of trampolines. Does anyone remember when they were trying to bring Captain America to Broadway? Look in your old comics and see the ad they tried to tease with. Well Superman’s show “Up Up and Away” has at least been done so why not a Spider-Man production.

SK, I think I saw your portrayal of Quasimodo on Broadway! Or ... maybe you were just hunching down in your seat since no one else really went to those comic plays at the theater. “Up Up and Away” is what happened to the money invested in those plays.
