Justice League Over Superman Returns Sequel?

This could be a great time to bring the Justice League to the big screen.

According to Hollywood North Report.

Following the success of various DC Comic book superheroes appearing in the CW’s, Vancouver shot Smallville TV series, comes reports that Warners may opt to greenlight a Justice League movie, from a screenplay by Kiernan and Michele Mulroney of Mr. and Mrs. Smith fame, instead of the Superman Returns sequel, The Man Of Steel.

Since its debut in 1960, the ‘JLA’ core membership of crime-fighting superheroes remains “Superman”, “Batman”, “Wonder Woman”, “Aquaman”, “Flash”, “Green Lantern” and “Martian Manhunter”.

"The Justice League of America has been a perennial favorite for generations of fans, and we believe their appeal to film audiences will be as strong and diverse as the characters themselves,” said Warners Jeff Robinov.

The film may hire new actors to play ‘Superman’ and ‘Batman’, similar to the practice of hiring different artists to illustrate established comic book titles, although the re-casting of Brandon Routh as ‘Kal-El’ may rekindle the Superman movie franchise, after a somewhat disappointing worldwide box office of $200 million. In comparison, Warners current 300, budgeted at $60 million, is on track to earn $200 million within the next few weeks.

The ‘JLA’ have also appeared in several cartoon TV series, including Super Friends and the current Cartoon Network series Justice League Unlimited from Warner Bros. Animation.

I would love to see them make this movie. If it does well, it could be a springboard for the members to spin off into their own movies. That would be a fanboy fantasy come true. :whee:

I think they should do an animated feature!

This doesn’t make sense. Why would they scrap a Superman sequel for a Justice League movie? Why would they scrap Bale and Routh for two new actors when it took them how long to find them?

This won’t happen in place of a Supermans sequel. I agree with Curvezilla, just make it animated for now.

The Superman movie made money but it was kind of a disappointment considering all they spent to make and promote it. Seems like they don’t want to do all of that for a sequel that may not have as large a return as the original.

A Justice League could give new actors a chance to make a good movie. If any of them standout as the characters, they would have a built in audiences for their own movie.

Maybe the studios aren’t as sold on Bale and Routh as we think but the studio could always come back to them if the Justice League movies isn’t huge.

Won’t happen. I also don’t see how the studios can call a movie that made more money than it cost to make a “disappointment.” Honestly I think it was movie audiences being hesitant after the last 2 Superman movies...."Superman Returns” did make more money that “Batman Begins” yet no one calls that a disappointment.

Mark my words. They are not going to scrap a Superman movie for a Justice League one. They’ve already signed Singer and Routh (as well as the other actors) to reprise their roles, and with the critical acclaim that both Routh and Bale have received in their roles it would be stupid for them to recast this soon.

WB is on a roll with movies like “300” and “TMNT” I don’t see them cancelling a Superman movie in favor of a Justice League movie, especially when they see how much it’ll cost.

Again. Won’t happen.

So, when are they scheduled to start shooting the next Superman and Batman movies? A year from now! I think it is interesting this story is even out.

You’d actually be wrong on that.

The next Superman movie is scheduled to begin shooting next March for a summer 2009 release. “The Dark Knight” is scheduled to begin shooting at the end of April for a July 2008 release.

They’re not going to hault production on “The Dark Knight” in favor of a Justice League movie that would take months and months to cast, another year or so for pre-production, and an additional 6-7 months to shoot...they’d be looking at a 2010 release.

You honestly think they’re going to risk cancelling their two biggest franchises on a hunch that a JL movie COULD be good?

I’ll repeat myself again. Won’t happen.

Thanks for the corrections on the dates and I admire you sticking to your opinion on the movie NOT happening when Warners Production President Jeff Robinov is saying it might. Of course I love unfounded optimism too.  :-)

Only because you misunderstand me. I never said a JL movie wouldn’t happen. What I said was that it wouldn’t happen in place of a Superman or Batman sequel. Jeff Robinov DID say it MIGHT happen, but he also said they wanted these characters to have their own separate films to re-establish themselves to the mainstream audience.

A JL movie WILL happen....someday.

Glad you cleared all that up. :-)
