Email Article Print ArticleWhich ship is larger, a Boeing 747 or “Serenity” from the movie and TV series “Firefly? Just exactly how tall is an Imperial AT-AT walker?
Jeff Russell at Starship Dimensions for several years now, has been putting together a comprehensive list of Starships from “Moya” of “Farscape” to the “INDEPENDENCE DAY” SHIPS and more. He has collected and drawn them to scale to show how they compare in size. A fanboy will need to see these ships. Answer to the original question, The Boeing 747.
His site is intended to allow science fiction fans to get an impression of the true scale of their favorite science fiction spacecraft by being able to compare ships across genres, as well as being able to compare them with contemporary objects with which they are probably familiar.
The scales are based on meter-to-pixel ratios so that they are accurate on any platform. The background grid is divided into groups of ten, and larger groups of one hundred pixels, to allow for easy measurement.
This site is only intended to compare the actual physical dimensions of the starships herein, and makes no claims as to any other aspect of these ships (firepower, speed, etc.). Each genre is worthy of respect in its own right and no preference is given to any one genre. If you are interested in a certain vessel/being, I encourage you to view the film or read the books in which they originally appeared in all their glory. In time, I will provide the source information with each vessel to make it easier to find these sources.
The charts are intended to be interactive such that Internet explorer users may click and drag the starships within the charts to arrange them in whichever way they please. I am working on incorporating the same feature for Netscape and other web browser users. The site is very Graphics intensive by nature and therefore is targeted towards a higher bandwidth connection (DSL, etc). It will likely bog down dialup connections.
We have gathered many of the starship images from various sources on the web included in my LINKS page, plus some I have drawn from scratch. This site is a constant work in progress, you will have to check back often to catch the latest changes and additions.
Above all, this site is intended as an homage to the many great people who have created these ideas for us to enjoy, so Enjoy!

This site is amazing. It is huge and has so many ships and beasts, think “Dune”, sizes listed and drawn to scale you will be visiting it more than once.
I was drawn to the Star Wars stuff but there is plenty more for you if you like any type of starships.
That is such an awesome sight!!! I especially like it in IE because you can drag the ships around and put them together for easier comparison.
