The Comic Art and Gaming Expo kicked off Friday night Dec. 2nd with a bang and the fund didn’t stop until Sunday! Friday night I attended a fund raiser for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund where I met David Finch, penciler of Young Avengers, Ult. X-Men and more. Finch was a super friendly guy and even though he is Canadian, I only heard him say “Eh” twice. We talked for a while about Moon Knight (his new project due in March) and some of the crazy requests he has gotten from a small but fervent MK fan base. Who would have known Moon Knight had a fervent fan base?

I was also introduced to the guys at Beckett Comics, Gabriel Benson and Jeff Amano. These guys are doing some awesome work on some great titles and you should be reading them! The Ballad of Sleeping Beauty is a must read for anyone who likes a great story. Writer Gabriel Benson was nice enough to take all my questioning about his books and nice enough to take my money in a late night poker game. The personality of the night had to be Steve Bennett. This guy was the life of the party. I listened to a ten minute re-inactment of a COPS episode that was one of the funniest things I have heard in a long time. Steve played all the characters using different voices and acting out the action. It was great! I watched Steve the next day at the CON and you can tell he just loves people. I think this is one artist who really understands that the fans are the business and he was very engaging with the fans. If anyone ever has the opportunely to book this guy as a guest or to see him as a fan you should do it. Let me remind you that CAGE CON was a first year convention and as you can already see they had some big name guests. I was really impressed by their guests and the amount of action they had going on. The dealer room was ample with a lot of dealers selling comics, cards, games, even swords. The artist alley was great with big names like David Finch, Jeff Amano, Steve Bennett, Cameron Stewart and others. I have to reiterate that this was a first time CON and to have this many great artists is a big deal. What I was really blown away by was the gaming side of the CON. From the rooms that housed the board games to the card tables, they were bursting at the seams! I am not really into gaming so I was really surprised at the turnout and the variety of ages I saw playing the games. I think I may have to check into this stuff and see what there is to it. I am sure my wife would love to see me pick up another hobby.  CAGE CON in my opinion was a big success. Hopefully next year they will have some of the small kinks worked out and have even more big stars at their CON. If you live in Texas this convention should make your can’t miss list and if you live anywhere else you should really try and make it.
