Superman and “The American Way”

Fox News is reporting the new Superman movie purposely leaves out the phrase, “The American Way”. “Truth and Justice” are OK to say but the filmmaker felt “The American Way” doesn’t mean what it used to mean and including it would hurt overseas sales. Can Superman really be himself if his home country is omitted? Isn’t the country in the movie, obviously, America? Is this political correctness?

I want to see the movie and it sounds like a good one but I am not sure how to feel if the “The American Way” isn’t good enough for Hollywood.
What do you think? Is this report true?

It’s true that the phrase “American way” is not in the film, but it doesn’t have a huge impact on the quality of the film. It’s apparent that America is Superman’s home country, but Superman is much more of an international character than most other heroes out there today. Since he is able to fly at the speed of light, he’s able to be all over the world when people are in need (this is addressed in the film).

Superman is an American thru and thru, but his powers belong to the World, and that’s what they’re trying to convey in the film.

I guess I am just too old school to want to see an icon changed in this manner. It is still a movie I want to see and Superman is always going to be cool.

Well it’s not like they are changing HIM, they are just dropping the “American way” line. Honestly I don’t think it’s that big of a deal because it doesn’t affect the character of Superman in any way. He’s still the same person, and if anything he is more of an international figure than he ever was. Superman is a character with American values so just because they stop saying “and the American way” doesn’t mean he isn’t an American anymore.

What makes Superman super is the fact that he believes in Truth, Justice and the American Way!  With out the moral compass that he learned from his two midwest parents growing up in small town USA, there is no Superman.  Hollywood things America has changed and that no one should strive to spread the American way.  If they believe that then they shouldn’t change one of the most iconic catch phrases in history, they should make Supes represent the values that America should have.  Supes IS American and fights for the American Way, if he was French he would just sun him self on the Seine river while the elderly die of heatstroke because they have no AC in Paris!

Of course Superman will be the same in spite of the changes made by the movies to make him more generic to the rest of the world. It just seems so ironic to have the movie open around the 4th of July and omit the phrase, “The American Way”. It is also interesting to read, the movie budget is 260 million and Americans are expected to be the biggest audience (consumer) for the movie. So, the largest group gets to live with the American phrase left out of the movie. I just find it interesting. ;-)

Curvezilla, what is up with the poor French? They will be OK as long as they have their wine, women and a song. They just have no real future as a world power as long as Superman is an American.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA! LET FREEDOM RING!

I’m not disputing the fact that Superman IS American, I am simply saying that them excluding that phrase from the movie did not make or break it. We all know Superman is American, he was raised with American values in an American town, but the character of Superman does not exclusively belong to America...he belongs to the World as the movie showed.

I was puzzled why they chose to take that out of the movie, but it’s such a minute thing it really didn’t even phase me. For those people that have a problem with Superman being American, I suggest they go read “Red Son.”

I don’t think it makes or breaks the movie either. You have a valid point of view. We just have to remember that Curvezilla is a Super Patriot and takes all things American a little more serious then some of us and you got to admit, he knows comics, Superman and he is probably living the good life thanks to his approach to “The American Way.” ;-)

Damn Stright!

You know what. I watched Iraq Confidential with Jesse James and it showed the most poignant thing.

Jesse was visiting the injured soldiers in the hospital. He accidentally wandered into the insurgent side of the medical unit where we were taking care of all the bozo’s who were shooting our boy’s. They were performing brain surgery on an enemy soldier who took a mortar round to the head and he was blown away that we would spend the resources, time, and money on our enemy. When he asked the doctor’s why they were doing what they were doing their answer was (paraphrased because I can’t remember the exact words): “Because we are Americans, and that is what we do.”

So I call bullsh!t on them taking out “The American Way” from Superman.
