Coldsnap Previews

WOW

HEARTBEAT AND TRON just got a NEW best friend.

Love,
Matt

Standard: Ideal 31-7-8

Really sweet art. But plenty of time to remember to hold that Faith’s Fetters for it, or voidslime the ability (well, saying voidslime is an answer to something is like saying Mistform Ultimus is also a <insert your favorite creature type here> - duh, of course it’s an answer).

Of course that is the ultimate Timmy card (even johnny to get it in faster). I do like it, but as for constructed playable probably not (white tron? hehe)

I hope it’s true that every snowflake is unique, because I never want to see one like this again.

I can see it as a one-of in Tron like Tomb of Urami was a one-of in the occasional deck.  Heartbeat will just kill you with the mana it has, rather than putting something into play that might or might not kill you next turn.

At least this one only makes you sacrifice it, instead of ALL your lands.  :)

Of course, that’s a LOT to sink 30 mana into, and it’s a snow permanent that doesn’t make snow mana, so maybe that’ll be relevant…

i’m no rules expert, what happens when two legends that are indesctructible with the same name are in play?

I play Natural Affinity like it’s goin’ out of style

They are both sacrificed, which cannot be stopped by Indestructibility.

This card could be used like the Stalking Stones in MUC or even U/W Control with very heavy counters.  I think it’s a rather cool Johnny card, and I imagine that Hunter or Delger will find something quite cool to do with it. :)

I personally think the Yeti is more my style.  Behold:

Dark Depths art makes my butt muscles clench. it’s a perfect illustration of why I’m not a fan of water.

interesting card. I bet there are other cards that manipulate counters.

“Wasn’t our plan just to get to 900 life and f***’em?”

Coldsnap Sealed: who cares
Coldsnap Draft: who cares

That could be very cool (pardon the pun) but look who has a new “best freind in a land”

Name: Chisei, Heart of Oceans
Set & Rarity:  Betrayers of Kamigawa rare

Printings:
Cost:
Card Type: Legendary Creature ? Spirit
P/T: 4/4
Rules Text (Oracle): Flying
At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice Chisei, Heart of Oceans unless you remove a counter from a permanent you control.

Rich, see a previous of mine in the cold and snappy thread… its not Chisei, Heart of Oceans, its Chisei, Eater of Age counters. As in… cumulative upkeep. Chisei and the BIG guy (8/8?) for 3 mana would get along if you can stack the upkeep triggers so that chisei removes the counter before you sac a critter. GOOD times ahead. maybe.

Matt

The only thing that excites me is that it looks like there is some amazing art in the set so far.  I like the ?icy? look of everything, and there?s an angel in the set by Jeremy Jarvis that looks positively spectacular.  (She?ll be on a lot of the packaging, etc.)

Told ya.  Super cool.

Wow, that angel seems really nice… especially with creatures that accumulate age counters(yours AND your opponents). I like the land a LOT, especially in tron… why not add in a win condition in the form of a land… seems really darn expensive, but it could work. Introducing the new, ultra-powerful BLACK TRON DECK! BWAHAHAHAHA!

Wow… now that i’ve come to think of it, that Valkyrie can be my tutorable Debtor’s Knell in Ghazi-Chord! wOOt… Miren + 2 Chord or Miren + Chord + Yosei/Valkyrie = GG. Seems fine to me… :)

Current Decks:

Mono-Green Turbo-Allosaurus!
Mono-Red BURN

RGD Draft: 25-7-2 :)

That angel is really awesome. I’m surprized at how many “crime” like ressurection effects White is getting. Sure white could bring creatures and other stuff (see avatar) from GY to play, but OTHER people’s GY? Isn’t this new for white? (starting with Debtor’s Knell I mean).

White is quite powerful overall really. blue and red are the colors that are on the weak side in T2 now.

I hope it’s true that every snowflake is unique, because I never want to see one like this again.

That’s a pretty fair assessment, probably.  White has been a lot stronger in Ravnica than it was in Kamigawa or Mirrodin or Onslaught or Oddyssey (except for Kamigawa limited where White was insane!).  I actually think Blue is stronger now, though, than it was back in Mirrodin/Kamigawa (post Ravager ban) Standard.  The difference is that the format is faster, so counter control is a less viable strategy than it used to be, even with Remand, Augustin, etc.

I love the angel, though!  She’s no Exalted Angel, but she might make a solid finisher after Yosei rotates out.  How about this for a deck base?  Priveledged Position, Crazy Angel, Kami of False Hope.  Could be annoying! :)

I’m not quite seeing your logic here… you mean for a CBS/RGD/CS/9E deck, or after the rotation? eh, whatever, the Angel is hot stuff anyway…

Yes, I meant that idea would work for Kamigawa/Ravnica standard (though I expect it will work afterwards as well--I’ll be mildly surprised if Kami of False Hope doesn’t show up in 10th--It’s simple, elegant, and in flavor from a block where many of the solid commons had various keywords that will keep them out or have the sub-type arcane).

What do you guys think of this guy?

Haakon, Stromgald Scourge
Legendary Creature - Zombie Knight 1BB
You may only play Haakon, Stromgald Scourge from your graveyard.
As long as Haakon is in play, you may play Knight cards from your graveyard.
When Haakon is put into a graveyard from play, you lose 2 life.
3/3

He’s similar to Genesis but 2G cheaper to use and probably even more abusable, but only if you build a deck full of a million knights and some underground palaces.  I’m kind of a fan--he works well with Hands of This and That and with our favorite Jitte wielder.  He’s also great vs. Wrath and Earthquake (and even better vs. Hurricane :P).  I honestly don’t think he’s at all playable in any format, but for style you can’t beat Haakon, Stromgald Scourge!

This sorcery seems good:

Lightning Serpent XR
Creature - Serpent Elemental
Haste, trample
Lightning Serpent comes into play with X +1/+0 counters.
At the end of turn, sacrifice Lightning Serpent.
The ice burst in steam after her, sizzling like thousands of snakes greeting her fiery mistress.
Illus. John Avon
2/1

Unless they have out a Boros Recruit.

Panglacial Wurm 5GG
Creature - Wurm
Trample
When you are searching through your library, you may play Panglacial Wurm from your library.
“Walk softly and maybe we can use it as a bridge”
-Ib Halfheart, goblin strategist
9/5

I think there must be a good way to abuse this one, but it’s just so expensive and having mana to play a shuffle effect with 7 left over seems like a stretch.

Sek’Kuar, Deathkeeper 2BRG
Legendary Creature - Orc Shaman
Whenever another nontoken creature you control is put into a graveyard from play, put a 3/1 black and red Graveborn creature token with haste into play.
4/3

I think this could be very, very good, but I wonder if it’s misspoiled and missing something like “Sacrifice these tokens at end of turn.” I can’t imagine why the tokens have haste otherwise.  It’s 5 mana for a 4/3 which isn’t awful, and it makes your opponent think VERY, VERY hard before playing Wrath.

This is probably my favorite card so far:

“Scrying Strata”
Snow Land
tap: Add to your mana pool
1+snow,tap : Look at the top card of your library. If it’s a snow card, you may reveal it and put it into your hand. ( can be paid with one mana from a snow permanent.)
Illus. Thomas M. Baxa
#149/155

Slow, relatively expensive card advantage for me!!!  This kind of thing IS my bag!  It can draw extra snow angels or lands or...well, that’s all I know of that I’d want to pull so far.  But more importantly--it’s the first card that I know of that actually encourages you to play snow-covered lands.  In the original block snow-covered lands were almost always a drawback.

There are 38 cards total at mtgsalvation, but these are the best ones not yet listed in this thread, I think.

Doing a Gatherer search for Knight, there’s only 9 right now in standard - all requiring White:

Court Hussar
Leonin Skyhunter
Lionheart Maverick
Paladin en-Vec
Paladin of Prahv
Sky Hussar
Skyhunter Prowler
Skyknight Legionnaire
Veteran Cavalier

So… that’s interesting that it’s not white (and even DOUBLE black, but again w/ Rav manabases that’s np at all for doubles in 2 colors).

I like the lightning serpent. I wonder if it’s good enough to make the cut into a RDW deck.

Actually, i’m pretty excited about the new vampire, just because it might be playable:

Garza Zol, Plague Queen4ubr
Legendary Creature - Vampire? R
Flying, haste
Whenever a creature dealt damage by Garza Zol, Plague Queen this turn is put into a graveyard, put a +1/+1 counter on Garza Zol.
Whenever Garza Zol deals combat damage to a player, you may draw a card.
5/5

That’s still a very hefty price tag, but nice abilities. I’m hoping for 6/6 or a 3ubr cost, but it could be playable.

I hope it’s true that every snowflake is unique, because I never want to see one like this again.
