Just FYI - I went to a draft yesterday and caught John Kopplin cheating. Blake Billingslea (sp?) told me to watch, as after we were done drafting our cards, he would go to the bathroom. He did, and the deck he came back with was NOT the deck he drafted. I was going to be playing him second round. I asked him if he just wanted to drop, never let it happen again, and we’ll forget the whole thing. His response was, “I came here to play, so if you don’t play, I guess that’s a loss for you.” Karma responded with me mulliganing to 4 on the first game and losing, but then I won the next two games.
Unfortunately it was at a store where there was no judge, the owner is barely a TO, and could only promise us that no one would be allowed to leave the deckbuilding area in the future, but without him having seen John do anything, there was nothing he could do.
If anyone wants the details, ask me in person. But there is 100% certainty that he couldn’t have drafted the deck that he played with. That on top of the fact that he never denied that he was cheating. I made it clear that all he had to do was own up to it, drop, and never let it happen again, and all would be forgotten. He didn’t seem to care for that option.
So just to let you know if you see him at a limited event, keep an eye on him. No reason to donate ratings points to a cheater.
Peace out.
Note: This is not a personal attack against John. I’ve always found him tolerable in a Magic-related setting. On top of that, he’s a fairly good player, who doesn’t need to resort to this sort of thing to win. But he did, so we called him on it.
