ColdSnap is cold and snappy!

I guess we can get things started on the ColdSnap information and speculation.  Here’s the first bit of info:

http://www.magiclampoon.com/coldsnap/coldsnap.html#famous

Also, we know that there will be snow-covered lands again (Ummm...does anyone else have something interesting to say about these?  I kind of like them, but I have never figured out why as they are 100% useless).  We also know that there is going to be one very nice-looking angel!

Coldsnap should be VERY, very interesting… seeing as WotC has to make it tie into Ice Age block(flavorwise), and the set has to be somewhat playable in Standard(*cough* homelands *ahem*) or else it will not sell AT ALL…

I really like the faux site you found, I actually thought it was MTG.com until I saw the name of the Mammoth(LOL?)... I really hope this appears on a card:

really, -

It’s cold.
Really, really cold.
Seriously cold.
I’m not kidding. It’s damn cold.
So anyways.
Can you take the cold?
Shut up. It’s a good saying, even if it is a bit clichéd.
Screw you.

Seems Fun! :)

Yawn....another shameless attempt by Wizards to pack a 4th set into an off year and get people to buy it because its “standard legal”.  Let me know which cards are “must have bombs” lol

From an “old block”... idk what’s going to be a ‘must have bomb’... and the snow-covered concept is going to be retarded… again… like it was originally…

YES, I was around and remember those days… at least it wasn’t as bad as Fallen Empires xD

Then again, I had fun with that set… :)

RGD Sealed Pariah’s Sheild(s) pulled: 17
RGD Sealed’s Played in: 16
(One was shiny...)

I like big creatures and I cannot lie
You other players can’t deny
That when a beast walks in with an itty bitty cost
And your blockers are all lost
You get removal!

I’m looking at the set from a limited standpoint, and it looks hella fun! Especially if there’ll be formats including RGD and/or 9E… don’t just say “That sux because it won’t be good for T2” and totally put it down… after all, a lot of older sets ended up being great sets for limited and not constructed(think homelands/alliances/fallen empires/the dark, etc.). Then again, i’m more of a drafter, so I tend to overthink that aspect, but whatever… :P

Totally completely true. I’m not buying a single pack for this reason (hopefully I don’t anyways). I’ll just get the must have cards (common to rare, hopefully it IS like homelands and that means 0) when I need them and that’s it.

I hope it’s true that every snowflake is unique, because I never want to see one like this again.

True and true.  Actually, three sets per year already sounds like a lot to me.  Maybe if instead of printing four sets each year they only printed two but made more interesting (easily accessible) formats we could emphasize the gameplay more than the purchase of new editions.  Right now the only formats that you can really get into reasonably cheaply are Type 2 and Block.  I’d love to see more emphasis on 2HG Block or something similar which wouldn’t cost extra cash, and would actually enhance the variety of decks that you encounter even more than a third or fourth set would (Ravnica block is probably an exception to this as each expansion spawns new decks rather than just refining the old ones as previous blocks primarily did).

So back to ColdSnap:  If it’s at all similar to the sets in its block I’ll skip with you.  The good news is that Standard is so diverse right now that unless they print another Umezawa’s Jitte equivalent (cheap, insanely overpowered, playable in almost any deck of any color) it shouldn’t make too much of an impact on the environment.  I mostly just want a few really solid commons or a solid Wrath variant.

I couldn’t agree more… if there were more interesting sanctioned formats(like 2HG Limited, 2HG Constructed, 3-Player Team Constructed, Rochester Draft, etc.) on a regular basis, instead of having just one big tournament and then everybody forgetting about it, they wouldn’t HAVE TO hype up extra sets just to get people interested in buying new product…

It seems to be better for the game anyway to have people buy product via events rather than just shelling out cash and cracking open boosters… For example, I’d much rather participate in a sealed tourney or a draft, than just buy a fat pack or a couple boosters and open them just to see what’s inside… makes it sooooo much more fun that way… after all, that’s the reason you buy the cards in the first place(see Chris Mettler’s Sig if you don’t understand :)).

Well, I am eagerly awaiting 2010’s release of “Unforged”... that should be some fun. :)

I’m thinking the next one should be Unzipped… :) Of course, it might have to be 18 and up…

Right now the only formats that you can really get into reasonably cheaply are Type 2 and Block.  - Right, dual lands that cost $15 or more, other rares in the $20 plus range like Jitte and the dragons.  Not sure that counts as “cheap”

So for formats, sealed or booster draft is fine with me over standard, but doing a sealed cold snap?  I’m not sure how much fun that would be (small card pool to begin with, not like 9th or one of the major releases, so lots of repeats in a set of five packs - either total bomb or bust I’d guess) Boosters would have the same problem, lots of repeats to go around.  Hard to say till it comes out I guess.

So we could have “UN believable” “UN reliable” “UN stable” “UN mentionable” “UN fastened” and you’d be happy?  Hm..guess I would too!

unencumbered

“Wasn’t our plan just to get to 900 life and f***’em?”

Coldsnap Sealed: who cares
Coldsnap Draft: who cares

As long as it’s UN-real, I’m ok with it.  :)

And I agree about limited.  Drafting Coldsnap-Coldsnap-Coldsnap will be crappy because of repeats.  Triple set drafts at pre-releases aren’t done as a skill tester, they’re done to get more of the new product.  Luckily, from what I’ve seen - Chris plans on doing real Ice Age Sealed - I saw some Ice Age Starters hiding somewhere, so hopefully we’ll get word on the event closer to the release date! :)

Either way, I don’t think anything they could throw into Coldsnap could beat RGD… I’m absolutely LOVING those drafts…
