Ideas for a Magic League

Now that the Plano store expansion is nearing completion, I was wondering if anyone else out there would like to see Chris allow us to form some sort of a weekly “Magic League” I’ve got ideas for two formats - one based on sealed and one based on draft. Both formats allow for maximum play with minimum cost!

The “Sealed League” would be 8 players with 8 sealed decks. Each week you play a different sealed deck in a swiss format, with the initial pairings decided by overall point standings in the league.  First would play second, third would play fourth and so on (first weeks pairings would have to be random.) Points would be awarded as follows:  3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a loss (to reward people who show up and at least play) At the end of the eight weeks, you get to choose the sealed deck you want to keep based on your standing in the league or we could do a rochester draft of the cards using standings to decide who goes first.  Sealed deck lists would be prepared and shared for everyone to see (so you can “preconstruct” your deck before league play each week)

The “Draft League” would also be 8 players, but you would draft your deck like normal, then each week you would play a different person in the league.  Same points system and at the end I think a rochester draft would be the best way to divy up the cards.

I’d love to see this on Mon or Wen evening around 6:30 myself, that is late enough to get there from work, and still early enough to finish 3 rounds of swiss at a decent hour.  (I’m avoiding weekends because there are often conflicts with release events and such) Anyone interested in starting something like this up if Chris would let us?

Id love to see something like this set up. I know id join if it was on Mon or Wednesday nights. Dont know about you, but id change a few things up. First of all, i dont like the idea of the highest rank getting to pick the deck they play. If someone drafts the nuts, they would easily be able to dominate this thing for the entire league schedule, and if your draft royally sucked manuevering out of last place would be hard. Id say if we were going to do something like this we do a true deck rotation. 8 week long league, everyone plays every deck once. That way skill is what determines the victor at the end, not just a lucky draft. If we did the first “week” as just registration (pack cracking and recording, maybe some “for fun” playtesting to get an idea) then the league would last 9 weeks with this format, which is a decent time for something like this. I dont know how much Id go with the idea of 0 points for not showing up. Sometimes you just cant make a schedule like this, and if you cant, what happens to our odd man out? Should the person that gets a BYE be punished for not having an opponent? or rewarded? doesnt seem right to me. Of course im sure there are rules in place to handle this kind of thing already, but in an 8 week league, missing 2 nights would pretty much put you out of the running for a decent placing in the ranks.. which would encourage those players to just not show up at all till the final “drafting”.

One last thought.. I prefer sealed to draft. I suck at drafting still and 8 weeks of getting chewed out by whoever wound up with my sucky drafted deck would get OLD!

The sealed league would trade decks each week so there is a great chance for people to show off their deck build skills and their play skills.  What would be interesting is you might know the first deck you will play that week, but you won’t know until after the results who you will play next.  You could build your deck to win that first match, and get hosed in your next two matchups.

For the draft league you would play your deck you drafted, but against different people each week.  So if you did draft bad, you would be stuck for 7 weeks playing the same deck.

I was also wondering about two headed giant, that could be fun to play as well (especially with random partners each week!)

Sounds like a great idea, especially the sealed league.  Wish I could be there for something like that. ;) It’s perfectly fair to have 8 different sealed pools, and have every player play with each one of the decks.  That is the fairest way to test the players’ deckbuilding skill, and it would seem to be fine to let the top players choose the decks they go home with after it’s all over and done with.  If you’re a better sealed player, then you’ll take the best sealed deck(well, in terms of $$, most likely) home… Seems like a nice way to determine “prize”...
