The Fantastic Four (Episode 5: My Neighbor Was a Skrull)

The new series on Cartoon Network continues with an episode that will leave you scratching your head and wondering what exactly just happened.

Much can be said about the latest episode of The Fantastic 4 entitled “My Neighbor Was a Skrull” so I’ll try to sum it up in just one word…weird.

Trying to recap this episode is almost pointless because you really have to see it for yourself in order to truly appreciate the oddball story behind it. Let’s just say that the team is abducted and kept aboard a Skrull ship only they have no idea. Everything they know has been recreated down to the last detail…almost.

Aside from the fact that every food or drink they pick up tastes like chicken, their neighbor Courtney (who hates them) all of a sudden wants to be best friends, their mailman Willy is asking about their worst fears, oh and that H.E.R.B.I.E now speaks Spanish…everything is just the same. See I told you this was weird didn’t I?

This was yet another enjoyable episode in the latest Marvel animated series. I am really enjoying this show not just for the amazing animation and design, but also for the stories and for the voice acting. The actors in this show have really grown on me. Hiro Kanagawa continues to impress me with his work as Reed Richards. Not only does he sound like you’d expect Reed to sound but he has a perfect Spanish accent as demonstrated in this episode. The rest of the cast is just as convincing as Kanagawa. Ben sounds like Ben, Sue sounds like the concerned older sister, and Johnny sounds like the hot shot little brother…it really is perfect casting.

The episode was great not only because it introduced the Skrulls to the series, but because once again it nailed the characters personalities. By the end of the episode Reed had figured out what was going and and devised a way to get them home. I am really liking how they portray Reed in the show, he’s so smart it’s almost bad for him because sometimes he’s so wrapped up in his thoughts that he’s “not even there” which of course gets under Sue’s skin.

I am really starting to believe that if Marvel can continue to deliver shows that are as good as The Fantastic 4 there’s no reason why they couldn’t give DC a run for their money when it comes to TV supremacy.
