Boba Fett is a favorite of mine. I don’t know why. He doesn’t have very many speaking lines in the movies. Maybe it’s his cool costume and the mystique that it invokes. Maybe it’s what little attitude he exudes. ("No Disintegrations.") Whatever it is, I am always a sucker when any material comes out about this mysterious bounty hunter.
So when I saw this one-off on the shelf, I couldn’t resist buying it. I didn’t even open it up and look at the content, which is rare for me. When I got done reading it after the purchase, I was mildly pleased but not overly-joyed by this basic story.
The story is very simple. I wouldn’t call it deep but it is pleasing. There is a bit of unpredictability to the plotline and it had me mad at moments then pleased afterwards. It all centers around an Imperial underling who wants to please his superior so he hires Boba Fett to take care of some local malcontents. The story takes off from there.
What had me non-plussed was the overly-cartoonish style of the artwork. I don’t mind the color job in this comic, it’s excellent. what I can’t stand is the proportional distortion of the caricatures. What really annoyed me was the shortening of the bodies and the enlarging of the heads / legs throughout the comic. The first time you see Boba Fett, he looks great. It has a cartoon look about it but not disproportionate. The caricatures go downhill from there. It’s like they left out quality on some of the smaller shots and the style breaks down when that happens.
In conclusion, the story is basic but decent. The style of the art really doesn’t endear me to it. I would recommend this only if you don’t mind the art (open it and look towards the middle before purchasing) or you are an absolute completist when it comes to Boba Fett. 2.5 out of 5 stars.
